$25,000 Maribor - Nastja Kolar - singles champion

The $25,000 Maribor tournament on the ITF Pro Circuit came to a close with the crowning of 16-year old Nastja Kolar in the singles event with a 75 64 triumph in the final.

To the delight of the local tennis fans in attendance, the two finalists, Wild Card entrant Kolar and third seeded Masa Zec-Peskiric, had defied the odds to make it an all-Slovenian final for as the quarterfinal draw was finalised, these two players were left as the sole representatives of the host nation and with the top two seeded players still involved. However, it was at this stage that the teenage champion elect eliminated the No. 1 seed and this win, coupled with the fall of the No. 2 seed, left Zec-Peskiric as the only seeded player into the last four and new favourite to go on to take the title.

This was not to be though and as the final got underway the two players had only lost one set all week between them. That loss came in Kolar’s opening round match where she lost the first set 62 and looked more likely to make an instant exit from the tournament than go on and claim the title, but she rallied back to take the next two 61 61 and never looked back.
